Update on Brian

(Ed White photo)

So our rising star, Mr. Brian Ellison, had a real bad accident at the 2011 Mayor's Cup race at Kenosha Velodrome. It was a nasty multiple-person accident involving a few ambulance rides and a few other riders getting medical attention. Thankfully mostly everyone was fine and walking afterward despite signs of the worst. Unfortunately, Brian didn't share that good fortune and was life-flight'd from a Kenosha hospital to Advocate Medical Center in Libertyville. Brian was diagnosed with a small skull fracture and internal bleeding around the break as well as a more or less floating collarbone with some serious abrasions across his body to boot. It was a long night full of plenty of anxiety for friends, teammates, organizers, competitors and especially family members. Many a thanks should be passed along to Josh, Molly and Joseph for literally chasing ambulances and helicopters all night in order to be liaisons to Brian and his fam.

The news evolved from awful to stable over the course of a long 16 hours. He did have energy for visitors the next night and was well aware and willing to admit, "at least I got a cute nurse." His pain wasn't giving much, however, and his spirits dwindled when the migraines started trumping the meds within a few short moments of dosage. It was good to see he was 'there' but it wasn't for lack of a massive effort over the course of 20 minutes.

As of Friday, the spirits have returned for longer spurts and the attitude is as pleasant as ever. Two key ingredients he'll need in the long path to recovery he has ahead of him. Discussions have also gone from what happened to what to do next. A tough transition to make laid up in a hospital bed but certainly another step in the right direction if you ask me. It's amazing how proud someone can make you from a hospital bed.

We're all excited for the next milestone which will probably be the time he can stand without any dizziness and walk without assistance. That sounds a bit gnarlier than it is. As far as he's concerned "if" was never even in the picture and his optimism is contagious.

Those of you that have had a chance to see him race or the pleasure of racing him in these last 12 months are well aware of the fire inside Brian. He can and will be needing it more than ever as he'll surely need to be patient and focused through this grueling spell of mundane exercises to get back to even touching a bicycle.

Despite all the gems said outta that boys mouth in the past 3 days, "All in due time" is by far my favorite.

Young AND Hot

(sooo good, ya gotta use it twice.. special thanks to Ed White)

For those of you that haven't been taking notes  on the teen dream (apparently some of you are), there is in fact a fresh new face plucked from the street scene and thrown into some spandex that has come out reallll hot. His resume over the last month reflects that - what with wins (and solo lap-up efforts) at Monsters, Fox River Grove, Quad City Crit, Spring Prairie RR and sweeps at Northbrook velodrome with more laps on the field to even count. Fear not, people. There is justice in the world. His results only look to get better as his passion for the bike has flourished into a full on obsession. We're here to ensure he keeps at it. Thanks for the chance, Bri! Yup. This big dog came out to roll. Y'all are welcome to stay on the porch.

DAFF!

Special thanks to Ed White

Ladies and gentlemen - Daphne Karagianis! The woman that told the President of the United States she would work for him given VERY specific and concrete terms. One major one being that she be moved back to Chicago so she can join the Chicago Cuttin' Crew....

Psh! NBD. We are very lucky to have our latest ADDition to the women's squad accept our invitation given her incredible talents, skills and personality. Oh. And did we mention she's a BEAST on the bike!? Cat 3 on the track and starting to make moves on this whole road thing. It promises to be the best year ever with Daphne in the CCC!

Git up and git out these next few weekends!

Holy Crap there is a lot of stuff going on over these next two weeks!

The majority of the team's road contingent will be making a trek out to Galena for the inaugural Tour of Galena being put on by xXx. As a team, this Cuttin' Crew representation was made possible through the financial backing from our major sponsors and we look to do you all proud as we will be staffing 7 racers in the men's 4's, 2 women in the 4's and, of course, our rockstar phenom, Miss Jannette Rho will be beaming with smiles of joy (and a new tooth) as she'll be out there representing our fine rag tag bunch in the Pro/1/2/3 Category. If the libations for the cheer choir don't create too much trouble and the internet works on them there smart phones, you could even expect live updates on site from the world's greatest support crew (Erin Dickey. and, well, me... Jeff)

If you aren't available or not into the whole roadie thing, there is still quite a Saturday for you to behold. There is going to be a Dre Day BBQ this Saturday at Union Park. It will be a re-creation of that awesome Dre Day back on his 50th bday. Pay no attention to the flier date. I just wanted to share that old thing. All are welcome to come raise a can and smoke some meats/non-meats and have a good time gathering in honor of one of the world's finest. Gather at Cal's at noon to ride over to Union Park. Again, it's this Saturday, June 11.

There will also be an unprecedented return for the Chicago faction of Global Gutz! So after reliving your fond memories of Mr. Gordon, you can do as Dre would have done and throw down for a ride around town and party hard! Be sure to get the whole lowdown of it on facebook.

Let's not forget we also have the raindate for Velo-City 2011, Chicago coming up! June 18th is the date. 8:30 AM is departure time! More details on that next week.

Before we get down to business:

We're a couple races into 2011, and the new kits have been deployed to rabid fanfare. A few things should jump out at you. Style counts, and so does history, so we had to get a little throwback action going in 2011. We're not saying we're going to cross the pond and take a Grand Tour, but we can think big, right? On a more serious side, this is a dedication. We've all been blessed, and possibly cursed, with an addiction for bikes. Life would be simple if we could just, say, go to the local court and get our game on with a pair of sneakers and a ball. Instead, we're hooked on a sport where you can spend a good chunk of pay getting a race-ready bike, a kit, a license, and entry into a race or two. Nevermind about the latest ceramic bearings or handmade French silk tires, as a wise man once said, "we're just trying to get to the bike race."

With that in mind, we go looking for sponsors. We're not P.R.O. and we're not a charity, but sponsor dollars go a long way towards getting us in the door and keeping the bus rolling and looking for glory. Pretty much every bike sponsor from Discovery Channel on down has discovered it's tough to make back every penny put into a team. For that, we have big thanks. We've got some of the old faithful back in our corner, and a couple new faces too. We want to introduce you, and we hope you recognize that they are not just sponsoring us, they are out there for grassroots racing, and this means most of you too.

First up, we've got the man who needs no introduction, the Best Bike Mechanic in Chicago, all-around font of knowledge, and the nicest man in the business. So what are you waiting for? Be sure to check out his new store hours, because he's got a lot going on.

Next up, we hope you never need to call Lawyer Jim. BUT if you're a Chicago area cyclist, pedestrian, or transit rider who's been a victim of injury, don't go asking the Internet what you're supposed to do, go ask a pro. We've all been tagged, and let's face it, you need all the help you can get. The other guy's insurance company has 6 lawyers determined to get you a settlement of zero.

If you rode the Cuttin' Cruiser to a race last year, there's a chance you already sampled some GK Snacks, aka the geniuses who had the bold vision to put M&Ms and Reese's Pieces in the same jar. This year, our friends from up in Waukesha are rolling out Savanna Orchards. Of course they are healthy and snackalicious, but they go one better: they've gone Paleo on us, putting BEEF JERKY IN THE TRAIL MIX. There might be some on the bus this year, but you will have to armwrestle half the team to get it. Seriously, get your own.

I don't need to tell you where to get the best Italian sub in town. They have been down for so long, you might even recognize them for being on the back of some other team's jersey back in the day. You want a Prosciutto Moz sandwich the size of your head? Go to Bari already! They even have a website now. Fraaaaank!

You've probably heard stories about the owners/operators at 4 Star Courier Collective. But did you know that for a small fee, you can call dispatch and have your messer show up in a State Champ's jersey?

If you have been pushing those physical limits or did have the misfortune of needing the services of one bike-friendly attorney (see above), you're also going to need to pay a visit to Wellness Chicago. Unfortunately, too many of the Cuttin' Crewstas have had to use their chiro, massage, and general homeopathic advice. If you're smart, you'll go before you get hit, and look after yourself right.

Need a LEED-certified building designed? Why not use a firm that's so bike friendly, they've got a bike shop downstairs. Seriously, they have been down from day one, and left many a drafting racer asking "What's an Architrave?"

If there's one thing we appreciate, it's folks that have to do their own thing. Our own Ben Fietz and photog-to-the-Prez (yes, THAT Prez. seriously, talkin Obama people) Chris Dilts are Boss Photo. You'll see more of their work here in the future, but check out their spot in the meantime. Pro with a capital P.

Jeez, we've got a crapload of sponsors! We're almost done, I promise. Stay with us.

You may remember hearing about SportCrafters at the Afterglow race last year, serving up the Grand Prize of the day: quality rollers from just down the road in Indiana. Why would you buy the fancy German ones for way more money? Seriously, they picked our brains to co-host the first Cyclocross race in their neck of the woods, and you can't sponsor grassroots racing much more than that.

Remember magazines? Unlike websites, they're shiny and heavy, you can leave them laying around, loan them to friends, and regret it when you wish you had them back. COG is one such magazine, and it's handmade just over the hill in Milwaukee.

And let's just wrap it up with a big shout out to the folks at Pickens-Kane. If you've ever caught a ride on the Cuttin' Cruiser from its oh-so-convenient spot in downtown Chicago, you have them to thank.

That's it! Thanks for having a look, and big thanks to all of our friends and sponsors in this crazy bike racing world for doing their part to keep us all going!

Ladies First!

Minny-snowta is known for being ruthlessly cold so it only makes sense the people that come from there are exceptionally warm and nice. It also helps to have a good engine and know how to roll tough on two wheels in any environment. Marie Snyder knows exactly what's up in both departments and we're damn lucky to have her bringing her talents to the Crew this year!

!!2011 is the best year ever!!

(Photo thanks to Luke Seemann)

Cut back to late Fall of 2007 and a group of dudes gathering in Adam Clark's garage to put together an obnoxious bike team consisting of the greatest assembly of bike geek invalids this side of the internet. (Fun fact: we were this close to being named Mayor Daley's Race Winning Task Force.)

That marked the time the seat harnesses lowered and we each grabbed the grips in naive anticipation for a ride on this crazy roller coaster. We've encountered countless transitions, lessons, experiences, successes, losses and had plenty of shenanigans...

2010 was just a small slice of it all. J Rho kicked off her addiction. Brean is kind of a big deal42nd place drew some attention. When Nico wins, everybody wins. It's all J-Pain does. When she doesn't, she does the next best thing. Who knew Brean could be classy? There was an absolute treat to be had in Wisco. Cleaning house was cool in Fall, too. Avi validated his master's upgrade for serious. DERRUMBA! BACK TO BACKWe checked out the new hot scene. The new guy repped out West. Double Up. We popped a massive cherry.

We also won't ever forget the world lost a great man last year.

Here we are in 2011. Here to prove that not all ideas get thrown out before the end of the first go 'round. We are a bit more grown, a bit more cast about, increasingly ambitious on an individual and larger scale, but we are still just as strong and gorgeous as ever . We've got some fresh new faces on the Crew to announce and, true to form, we'll be unleashing them along with all our fun/legal exploits upon all 3 of our loyal readers slowly and surely. Until then just remember..

!!2011 IS THE BEST YEAR EVER!!

Further Details on Andre Gordon's Memorial Services

It was a nice moment at the park in memory of Dre. Some people got up to share stories and reasons why we all cherish and adore him and it was very nice. Our sympathies go out to all of you that have since moved too far away from the city and/or the scene and can't reach out to someone directly to share your wonderful memories of Dre. Find solace in knowing that everyone is always willing to talk about him whenever and you're not alone in feeling for him. His impression left on us all isn't gonna be going anywhere.

Memorial services will be held this weekend. Friday (11/19) will be visitation and viewing from 3 PM - 9 PM. The wake and funeral will be on Saturday (11/20)  at 11 AM - Noon then Noon - 1 PM, respectively. The location is A. A. Rayner & Sons Modern Funeral Service at 5911 W Madison.

We will be organizing a group bicycle ride to the services on Saturday. Expect a departure around 10 AM from the Billy Goat's at 1535 Madison. If you believe in 4 day early forecasts I challenge your credibility as a Chicagoan but will humor you with pointing out it looks to be sunny but chilly. If things turn too difficult I will arrange for the bus to transport us all from Billy Goats.

Finally, this video has been making its rounds but I can't stress enough how beautifully this captures Dre in his essence. Man that laugh and energy says it all...
